Episode #1

Read this true story, and make your inferences on the credibility of private sector banks like AXIS Bank.

This is a true story of how AXIS Bank has been behaving in the matter of my credit card account:
  1. First, they approach you with sweet talking salesmen who will lure you into applying for a credit card with them. These salesmen will suddenly vanish, or leave the bank, as soon as you apply for the credit card.
    Your merry-go-round will start now.
  2. They lost my application and kept dilly dallying the isssue of the credit card until I started writing to them and sending out emails.
  3. Every person you contact will pass the buck to some other invisible person. Your emails will bounce. They will deliberately never give any explanation in writing, or respond in writing to your written complaints.
  4. They eventually issued a credit card (even without tracing the lost application). They issued a "silver card" whereas I had applied for and was originally offered a "gold card" (by the bank's salesman).
  5. For a default/delay in paying a small amount, they once sent me an astronomical claim of several rupees. A clever way to swindle the innocent customer.
  6. After I raised a hue and cry, they agreed to refund the excess amount which they had extorted from me.
  7. Once bitten, twice shy. I immediately asked them to close my credit card account (sometime in 2007). But they never cared to give a formal confirmation of the closure of the account. Each time the Branch Manager, would give some cock-and-bull story and buy more time. And if you go back to the branch after waiting in good faith, you will discover that the Branch manager has been transferred and there is a new Manager who has absolutely no clue of the problem. So, you can start all over again. Do you really want to do this merry-go-round ?
  8. After about two years and several written complaints, they finally issued a half-baked letter on 11 June 2009 (repeat 2009) that the credit card account was closed on 27 Dec. 2007 (almost two years ago). This proves the efficiency and sense of responsibility of AXIS Bank. Notice that the letter does not mention why it has taken two years to confirm its own action. Neither does it offer any apology for this lapse. See letter from the bank.
  9. Notice that the letter is not signed. It carries a ridiculous and illegal disclaimer that since the letter comes from a computer, it need not be signed. By this logic, no letter generated on a computer needs to be signed. Will AXIS Bank itself accept such letters ? Will AXIS Bank honour a cheque which is not signed, just because it is printed on a computer ?
  10. Of course the letter itself is full of blunders and howlers.
  11. They have not even cared to spell the name of their valued customer correctly. This is called adding insult to injury. Will AXIS Bank honour cheques where the name of the payee is spelt wrongly ?
  12. My last letter dated 17 June 2009 to the bank has not yet (30 June 2009) been responded to. The bank does not even care to acknowledge complaints from its customers. Be prepared to face such indifference and apathy if you have the misfortune to deal with AXIS Bank.
  13. All this has happened to a person who is a scientist of international repute, a respectable Professor, and a so-called valued customer of the bank. You can imagine the fate of lesser mortals.

Do you want peace of mind, or do you want to keep fighting with incompetent, dishonest and irresponsible persons ?
You can choose.

Do not feel so helpless

The Reserve Bank of India has created a legally empowered agency to deal with complaints related to unfair and illegal banking practices. All you need to do is give a complaint in writing on plain paper, the nearest Banking Ombudsman. Look here for more details ::
http://bankingombudsman.rbi.org.in/

The very fact that a special agency has been created to handle banking related complaints, proves that such unscrupulous practices are very common in banking particularly with private sector banks.

It is going to get tougher for private sector banks, to cheat the public. The government has taken notice of such unscrupulous banks.
